CSU bike-sharing system records 948 rides, avoids 0.0883 metric tons of C0₂ in two months
The Caraga State University (CSU) Bike-Sharing System has shown significant environmental impact in its first two months of implementation, recording 948 campus rides and helping avoid an estimated 0.0883 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from August to September. According to data gathered by Pollution Control Unit and iKilos Bayugan, the initiative also led to the avoidance of 37.6 liters of gasoline and a total of 900+ hours of active travel among student and staff users. The figures were calculated using the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) tailpipe emission factor of 248.55 grams of CO₂ per kilometer traveled. The CSU Bike-Sharing System, launched through a Memorandum of Agreement between the university and PadyaKalikasan, aims to promote sustainable mobility and low-carbon transport options on campus. The program provided bicycles and bike racks for student and faculty use, advancing climate-friendly practices and supporting local policies on active transportation. The evaluation underscores the potential of campus-based active mobility programs to support the country’s commitments to climate resilience and sustainability.
